Cardiff Blues Try Fighting Cancer with Colour
Cardiff Blues rugby stars were preparing to fight cancer with colour at the launch of a special walk in aid of a Welsh cancer charity this week.
Cardiff Blues players Martyn Williams and Gethin Jenkins were on hand to launch the third annual Cancer Research Wales Pink and Blue walk, which is set to take place on Sunday September 7 in Cardiff Bay.

The walk, which starts outside the Norwegian Church and takes a four-mile route to the Cardiff Bay barrage, is one of the most colourful charity events in South Wales, with hundreds of supporters all wearing either blue, to show support for prostate cancer, or pink, for breast cancer.

Breast and prostate cancer are two of the most common cancers affecting men and women in Wales. Cancer Research Wales is currently funding cutting edge research into these two cancers in its laboratories at Velindre Hospital in Cardiff and this year’s Pink and Blue Walk will raise funds to help continue and develop this research.

Cancer Research Wales is also the nominated charity of the Cardiff Blues – so walkers at this year’s event can expect to bump into some of their favourite rugby stars along the route, as the Cardiff Blues players swap their boots for their trainers and join in on the walk.

Cardiff Blues and Wales star Martyn Williams said: “We are delighted to able to support such a worthy organisation as Cancer Research Wales as our designated charity this season. We are encouraging all our supporters to turn out in force and take part in the Pink and Blue walk on the 7th of September.”

Liz Andrews, Deputy Charity Director for Fundraising at Cancer Research Wales said: It’s fantastic that the Cardiff Blues will be supporting this year’s Pink and Blue walk, which is set to be another great event. All the money raised at the walk will remain in Wales, where it goes towards funding of vital research into groundbreaking cancer treatments and diagnosis.”
